PieceJob (“we”, “us”, “our”) is a South African labour marketplace that connects job posters with skilled workers. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, store and protect your personal information when you use our platform at piece-job.co.za and any associated mobile applications.
When you create an account we collect your full name, email address, phone number, province, city, suburb, and whether you are a job poster or worker. Workers may also provide a bio, rate, skills, portfolio photos and availability information.
To build trust on the platform, users may voluntarily submit their South African ID number and a photograph of their ID document (ID book, smart ID card or passport). We validate the ID number using the Luhn checksum algorithm. ID documents are stored in a private, encrypted storage bucket and are only accessible to PieceJob administrators.
We collect information about jobs posted, bids submitted, assignments created, reviews left, messages sent, and payment confirmations. This data is essential to the operation of the marketplace and to resolving disputes.
We collect standard technical data such as IP addresses, browser type, device type, and pages visited. We use cookies and local storage for authentication and session management only — we do not use tracking cookies for advertising purposes.
We use your information to operate the PieceJob platform, including creating and managing your account, facilitating job postings and bids, enabling messaging between users, sending email and push notifications about job activity, verifying your identity, resolving disputes, and improving our platform. We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
We share your public profile information (name, suburb, skills, rating, portfolio) with other users of the platform as necessary for the marketplace to function. We share your email address with our email provider (Resend) to send transactional notifications. We do not share your ID documents, phone number, or personal data with other users, advertisers, or third parties except as described below.
In the event of a serious incident (theft, assault, property damage or other criminal activity), we may disclose user information including ID documents to the South African Police Service (SAPS) in compliance with the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977 and upon receipt of a valid subpoena, warrant, or court order. We may also voluntarily report to SAPS where we believe there is an imminent risk to personal safety.
Your data is stored on servers operated by Supabase (hosted in AWS data centres). ID documents are stored in a private storage bucket with row-level security — only authenticated administrators can access them. All data is transmitted over HTTPS. We implement industry-standard security measures but cannot guarantee absolute security of data transmitted over the internet.
Under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), you have the right to access your personal information, request correction of inaccurate data, request deletion of your data (subject to legal retention requirements), object to the processing of your data, and lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator. To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@piece-job.co.za.
You can request deletion of some or all of your personal data without deleting your account. To do so, email us at hello@piece-job.co.za with the subject line “Data deletion request” and specify what data you would like removed. We will process your request within 30 days and confirm once complete.
Please note that certain data may be retained where required by law (e.g. dispute records, financial records) or where deletion would prevent the platform from functioning correctly (e.g. reviews you have received from other users).
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will remove your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain it (e.g. dispute records, financial records). ID documents submitted for verification are retained for 12 months after account deletion to comply with FICA and CPA obligations, after which they are permanently deleted.
PieceJob is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors. The ID number validation enforces a minimum age of 18.
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify registered users of material changes via email. The “last updated” date at the top of this page indicates when the policy was last revised.
